Improving athletic facilities to enhance academic excellence and the student-athlete welfare.

WKU engaged KNBA for the design of a new Softball and Soccer Indoor Training Facility. The proposed site was the existing asphalt parking lot and adjacent lawn immediately South of the soccer field. Programmatically, the facility will be the full-time home for the Softball program and game-day facility for the Soccer program.

The project included the development of a small entry plaza area between the new facility and the existing softball stadium. This plaza serves as a new front door for the softball and soccer complex.

The facility has two separate but related exterior cladding systems as follows:

Training Portion – the indoor training facility portion of the building is a Pre-Engineered Metal Building type system and has metal panel walls and a standing seam metal roof. The walls and roof are insulated with exposed internal wrapped batt insulation. There are multiple overhead doors into this space.

Locker Room/Office Portion – this half of the facility has a load bearing masonry (block and brick) exterior. The roof is a steel joist structure with a flat modified bitumen roofing system over built-up insulation with internal drains. There is a limited amount of aluminum storefront at the entry to the facility and to each sports’ portion of the building.
