There was no template for this project — Kentucky had never had a day training center designed specifically for adults with autism. State funding for autism services stops at age 18, leaving adults with few places to turn once they age out. This facility is a new prototype, so we built the design around the people who know the population best: BCA’s clinical team, whose decades of combined experience shaped every decision.
Working within an existing 15,000-square-foot suite, our team transformed the space into an environment that feels calm and predictable for individuals with sensory sensitivities — with flexible spaces for 1:1 instruction, group therapy, and hands-on practice in daily living and job skills.
Every detail answers a real need. The layout balances private instruction spaces with open sight lines, so staff can give clients room to work independently while keeping watchful eyes nearby. Bathrooms are sized for staff to assist with life-skills training. Quiet rooms are placed throughout the plan, with acoustics tuned to create a low-sensory retreat when the day gets overwhelming
The campus opened in October 2025 with capacity for roughly 100 young adults — proof that the right renovation can deliver a first-of-its-kind facility without building from the ground up.
